It's finally here! Everything you need to host YOUR OWN MAGIC CAMP is now in one book! It had to be--it's the only book
on the subject! Buy it today, read it tomorrow, and host a camp next week! (Well, almost that quickly!)
MAGICIANS IN THE MAKING: A Complete Guide To Hosting A Magic Camp covers it all! You'll discover the reasons
why you should host a camp, where to host them, when, and especially...how! But there is more! MAGICIANS IN THE MAKING provides you
with the marketing information you will need to contact and set up your first camp. Samples of flyers and certificates, list of needed supplies,
and sample camp schedules are ALL included!
MAGIC magazine wrote: "[MAGICIANS IN THE MAKING] is a thorough manual that walks
the reader through all aspects of the business. With the summer months approaching, the timing is perfect for planning and establishing
your own local or regional magic camps."
But this book covers far more than just the who, what, where, and whens. A decade of time-tested magic tricks, used with children of all ages,
are also included, with accompanying illustrations, patter, and specific points that each magic trick offers the up-and-coming magician. Maybe
this is why award-winning magican and magazine colomnist ALDO COLOMBINI says: "[MAGICIANS
IN THE MAKING] not only teaches you good magic,
it also contains valuable advice on how to became an experienced magician and an accomplished performer in this fascinating field of
entertainment. This book is a must for the serious student of magic. It is also highly interesting for young magicians who want to find
some good magic to start with."
But, we haven't stopped with magic alone! You will also find information on balloon sculpting, juggling, cup stacking and more! In fact,
we have even included the secrets on how to plan "next year's"camp, maintaining that additional income that comes with teaching
a magic camp.
But don't take our word for it. Listen to what those who who are "in the know" with regard to magic, children and teaching have to say:
"This how-to handbook is filled with good, practical advice
based on solid experience.
[MAGICIANS IN THE
MAKING] covers everything
from marketing techniques to curriculum.
Study it well and you can be successful!"
DAVID GOODSELL
(Past National President Society of American Magicians
and founder/director of the West Coast Wizards
Magic Camp)
"Jim Merrills has an amazing ability to see a good idea, seize and develop it,
and make it into a successful program for kids.
And he's done an excellent job of sharing his secrets in this book."
KENT CUMMINS
( Founder and Director of The Magic Camp, Austin, Texas)
"MAGICIANS IN THE MAKING not only shows you the how and why,
but, how to make DOLLARS AND CENTS from this untapped market.
It has everything you need to succeed."
HANK MOOREHOUSE
(Past National President Society of American Magicians
and acclaimed professional magician and magic dealer)
"Jim has unlocked the door to a new venue for 'working magicians.'"
GEORGE SCHINDLER
(Past National President Society of American Magicians
and Proprietor Show-Biz Services)
"How do you get hired, year-after-year, to teach magic and entertain children?
This book explains how! Mr. Jim is a pro at developing events that are wonderful fun for kids,
and wonderfully simple for busy librarians to work into their programming plans."
PATTY MILLER
(Librarian, Colon, MI -- "Magic Capital of the World")
M.U.M. (Society of American Magicians) Review:
"If your forte is working with kids, and you are looking for a good, fresh,
viable market, we highly recommend MAGICIANS in the
MAKING, A Complete Guide to Hosting a Magic Camp, published by Samuel Patrick
Smith [SPS Publications].
Jim Merrills has several years experience performing school and
library shows, and other kid-oriented special events (along with other
experiences in magic). He was an instructor at West Coast Wizards Magic Camp
for nine years. He knows what kids like and he knows how to teach them magic.
What he has done in this book is present a step-by-step plan for half-day and
full-day fun programs where kids see and learn magic.
We generally think of
the word "camp" as representing week-long residential experiences, or perhaps
a daily trip to the YMCA for a week or two. Jim has capitalized on the
"feel" of the camp experience and has applied it to a short-term experience.
It works, and should have great appeal to kids and their parents.
The book
begins with a good discussion of the concept and the goals for having such a
camp. As Jim points out, your best success will come if "earning money" is
not your only goal, “if you truly want kids to learn magic." This is followed
by a brief analysis of what a one-day camp includes, and what other types of
camps are possible. He goes on to present in some detail the structure of
his one-day camps, where he holds them, who attends, how many children to accommodate
per session, the cost of providing such camps and how to finance them. This
includes Jim's excellent approach of finding business sponsorships.
In Jim's
camps he teaches magic, balloon twisting and juggling, but the emphasis is on
magic. Several pages are devoted to the tricks that Jim teaches. These are
basic tricks found in most beginner's books on magic. These will not be new
to you, but they will be new to kids. They include rope tricks, some simple
sponge ball moves, elementary card and coin magic, simple sleight-of-hand
moves like the French drop (simple, but not effective if not learned properly;
one of the benefits of the class or camp). Tricks with rubber bands,
pencils, paper money, crayons, etc., are included, and Jim presents the
effect and the method of the tricks he uses in both half-day and full-day
camps. Examples of tricks you might be familiar with are the rope through the
body and the penetration of a ring through a rope, used in his extended camps.
In Jim's camps he teaches
the basic three-ball cascade and a fun activity called "cup stacking." Magic
camps are not just about fun and magic (although mostly so). It is still
important that youngsters learn elementary showmanship and presentation, how
to work with assistants from the audience, and come to revere the history and
secrets of magic. Jim explains how he does this and outlines general camp
rules and how he works with kids needing special attention.
Also included is
a list of materials needed to teach camps of various sizes, the use of
certificates of completion and several tips, suggestions and resources. This
soft-cover book has 128 pages, includes photos and illustrations, and has a
full-color cover."
